Additional Resources to Learn about Ticks and Tick Safety

Ticks and the dangers that come with them are increasing across Ohio. From new kinds of ticks to new diseases and year-round activity, these insects are becoming more of a problem on the job and at home. Tim McDermott, an assistant professor and tick expert from Ohio State University recently joined Josh McQueen, AEP Ohio Emergency Preparedness Manager to discuss what we can all do to prevent tick bites.

Key takeaways:

• It’s all about prevention.

• Ticks are active year-round.

• We’re seeing new diseases, species and ranges.

• Everyone should have a personal plan for safety.

• Treat clothing with permethrin (especially FR clothing) and skin only with DEET.

• There’s one correct way to remove a tick. Use tweezers or a pointy tick tool, get to the tick’s embedded head and remove the entire insect.
